7:20p A ROUGH DAY AT THE OFFICE

Yesterday I made a solo trek into an area deep within the Pine Barrens known for its dim, mossy cedar swamps and rich variety of orchids. There was no evidence of other visitors, which I thought a bit strange since the site is well-known. However, the site is isolated by two hundred or so yards of dense bramble to the west, and a small river running along its eastern bank, which probably discourages all but the most fanatical botanizers. I didn't see another soul all day.
Saw some pitcher plants, but alas no orchids--not even the conspicuous Yellow Fringeless Orchid (Platanthera integra). I spent most of my time trying to figure out where I was, as the vegetation was so dense that I even lost sight of the nearby river for a while. I'd thought I had my good compass in my pack, but all I had was some cheap little keychain compass that failed to give a sufficiently convincing reading, despite my coaxing, cursing, and cajoling. After a while I just decided to keep the sun at my back and head north to find the sandy shallows near the canoe launch, upriver.
The countless mossy root-burrows under the cedars lining the river looked like great hibernating dens for Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus). An encounter wasn't very likely since they're so rare, but I poked about the cedar roots with my staff and minded my footfalls, regardless. My imagination placed them in that setting all too easily. Thanks, imagination.
The high point of the day came unexpectedly: I nearly drowned trying to ford the river in my rubber boots. I was trying to find a shallow sandy area in one of the river's elbows so that I could make out the bends in the river to get a rough idea of where I was on my map, but the shallows near the riverbanks were much deeper and muddier than they looked (or I remember). I went in up to my neck, backpack and all. Whoosh! I quickly tried to find solid ground, hoping not to sink further into the muck under me. Luckily, the nearby sandbar took pity on me. That's what I get for not probing with a stick first! Should know better, since I've been unceremoniously duped by these Pine Barrens rivers all my life. Apparently my memory only goes back nine months.
I then slowly made my way up through the grassy fens and cedar bogs along the river until I finally reached the shallows of the river, which is also a drop-off point for the local canoe rental outfits. Since no one was around, I took a leisurely open air (read: nekkid) bath in the river, washing off the vestments of mud, ticks and plant matter. While washing my shirt, I noticed it actually had a ring around the waist. "That'll never come out," I thought.
I was quite thankful that the river was so gentle in administering the day's lesson; it could have been much worse. Jury's still out on whether one of my cameras will survive, but that's the cost of doing business (if your stock-in-trade is foolishness, that is).
I then made my way a half mile back along the sandy trails to my burro. Since I'm an idiot, I plan to try again later this week. More dispatches soon.

3:41p looking to join/form goth band
Hi, I'm a 22-year-old keyboardist/singer looking to join or form a band. I've written many sad songs and would love to "goth them out" with strong bass guitar, drums and other instruments like synth, violin, cello etc. From hard to melodic sounds. Or I would be open to creating new ones. I'm open to all sounds but some bands I like are black heart procession, the cure, nick cave, magnetic fields, bella morte, primus I live in West Philly. Send me a message if you are interested.
